These watercolors were painted aboard the “Eider” while cruising Downeast amid the awe-inspiring beauty of the Gulf of Maine.

Eider moored at Perry Creek

These watercolor paintings were painted aboard the Eider, a 30’ sailing vessel, while cruising the rocky coastline of Maine.

Time on the ocean is truly a magical experience where life is reduced to its basic elements. The wind, the water, and the weather dictate all. While onboard, slowly a feeling of becoming one with the ocean evolves as the marine world starts to reveal its presence.

I love to travel with my watercolor paints; it’s a small set with only the essentials, three favorite brushes and stacks of postcard size paper. For me, traveling this way is freedom and a way to carry the essence of me out far from home. Painting while on the road, or out at sea, is a way for me to look closely and immerse myself within a place. The scenery may change but my “there-ness” in the landscape remains.

Often these paintings don’t return home with me. They may be given to friends or perhaps traded away to a local fisherman for lobsters. At times, these paintings are taken by the breeze and land in the ocean. The process of painting is what is most important to me. It offers me an opportunity to discover where I am and how I got there. In short, painting is a way to be more fully wherever I may be.
